If that doesn't work, change the size of your client window and try 'auto-adapt resolution' again.

Under 'display settings' monitor icon choose 'auto-adapt resolution'. (until you do this auto-adapt option below is greyed out) click 'cancel'. Under the 'actions' lightning icon choose ctrl+alt+del. Wait until it it says 'waiting for image'.
